Tourists looking to relax on the beach aren’t the only ones that head to Russia’s Black Sea resorts in the summer – fishing aficionados grab their poles and line the banks to take part in the spin fishing festival. Dozens of people flock to the village of Bolshoi Utrish, located 15 kilometres outside of the resort-city of Anapa, for the three-day festival. This part of the Black Sea coast however, is not the easiest to manoeuvre; the area is rocky due the fact that the coastline is formed by large boulder deposits. But this is exactly what the fishermen need. They are interested in the marine predators that frequent rocky coasts: Black scorpionfish, gobies and horse mackerel. If they’re extra lucky, they might even catch a croaker. Here the prime fishing season lasts from the end of May through October, but the most avid fishermen visit Bolshoi Utrish year round. The hunt for the sea predators begins after sunset when the fish swim closer to shore. Before the start of the tournament, participants traditionally kick off the competition with a culinary duel, preparing «ykha» fish soup from what they caught during their warm-up. After the meal, the real competition begins!
