The metrological museum

Life as we know it in the modern world was created thanks to many accurate measurements. Without these specific and specialised calculations, a car wouldn’t run and an airplane wouldn’t fly. Metrology is the science of measurement. Russian Travel Guide host Igor Maximenko visited Russia’s only Museum of Metrology, located in St. Petersburg, where he learned about the history of the systems of measurements. One of the most interesting parts of the exhibit is that which features Russian standard measures of weight, length and volume: Fathoms, pounds and arshins. Here visitors can also find oddly-shaped and sized handweights – some of which are even made of glass, as well as weights dating back to 1747 that Empress Elizabeth of Russia declared the most accurate.
