At the end of the 19th century, the Russian Empire, the largest country in the world, was in the middle of an impressive period of prosperity. It was at this time when the most tragic of events brought this period to a complete and utter halt. A monument to this unfortunate incident – the majestic and elegant Church on Spilt Blood - stands in the centre of St. Petersburg, the former imperial capital. The church is called such as it was built on the place where the murder of Tsar Alexander II took place. The emperor is known for emancipating the serfs and holding daring liberal reforms, actions which made him a main target for revolutionists and terrorists. Learn about the unprecedented in Russian history hunt for an emperor, as well as about the Church on Spilt Blood, known for its amazing collection of art and as a memorial to Tsar Alexander the Second in RTG TV's new programme.
