Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug is a little bit smaller than France is. There live people who have preserved the ancient way of life and traditions, left by the ancestors. The Khanty are deer-breeders and the Mansi are fishermen. Some consider their relatives to be the Finns, the Hungarians and the Indians of the tribe Navaho. According to the legend there existed the great Ural Race. They were majestic people with their own specific language and traditions. They didn't held wars and lived in harmony with the nature. Centuries have passed. The part of the great nation has moved to another places. These were their descendants Khanty who stayed in Siberia. The population today is estimated a little more than 30 thousands people. They lived the way their ancestors deerstalkers-nomads lived hundreds years ago. Their settlements were scattered on the whole territory of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. To feed the animals, deer-breeders had to lead a nomad's life. They gather all together once a year on the traditional holiday. They put on their best clothes, compete in boldness and accuracy, prepare national cuisine dishes. But the most important event for the Khanty is a race on a team of deers. The RTG TV team had an experience of living in chooms, ruling deers and wearing national khanty clothes.
