Tour of Russian North

The city of Arkhangelsk lies on the banks of the Northern Dvina river 40 kilometers far from its exit into the White Sea. From the earliest times inhabitants used to call their region Pomorye and themselves the Pomors. For almost 150 years Arkhangelsk has been the only one port of Russia, and up to the present the way of life there is aimed at the sea. The first Russian settlements were founded by the Novgorods on the right bank of the Northern Dvina river as early as 12th century. And the Mikhail-Arkhangelsk Monastery was mentioned chronicle for the first time in the year 1419. In the end of the 16th century Ivan the Terrible ordered two Moscow voivodes* to erect a fortress under the Monastery because of frequent attacks of the Swedes. In the year 1584 of city foundation the voivodes raised rapidly the city around Arkhangelsk Monastery. They named it Novokholmogory, then renamed as Arkhangelsk. The open-air Malye Karely Museum is 28 kilometers far from the center of Arkhangelsk on the right bank of the Northern Dvina river. Monuments of wooden architecture of the Russian north are assembled in the territory of 139,8 ha. The exposition includes around 100 civil, social and church constructions, the earliest ones dated as of 16th century and sectors, presenting the regions of origin - Kargopolsko-Onezhsky, Severo-Dvinsky, Mezensky and Pinezhsky. The city of Arkhangelsk and the unique monuments of ancient wooden architecture will be presenter by Eugenia Altfeld.
