The Age of Discovery and space exploration have left very little on the Earth unexplored. Our planet’s surface however, is about 70 percent covered in water, making these hidden territories much more difficult to study. In attempts to unravel the mysteries hidden in the ocean depths, mankind has taken some timid steps forward into the unknown, underwater world. The main challenge initially presented to engineers and inventors was how to supply divers with enough oxygen to allow them to spend extended periods of time deep under water. This problem was solved in the middle of the 20th century with the invention of the diving cylinder, or scuba tank, which helped man move freely and breathe under water. Since it was first invented, the apparatus has undergone many alterations and modernizations, but its main purpose has remained the same: To make the underwater world accessible to everyone.
