Kogalym — city of oilmen

The name "Kogalym" translates from the language of the Khanti, the native people here, as "ruinous place". For thousands of years in the north of Yugra, where the city is located, the harsh northern natural environment ruled. And that would have continued for centuries more, if man hadn't discovered oil here. A city was built next to the deposits — in just 30 years it would be transformed into a wonderful oasis amidst the endless Siberian marshes. The only thing that remains unchanged is that Kogalym is to this day a city of oilmen. Of the 60,000 inhabitants, almost alll are linked to the oil sector. Today, Kogalym is often referred to as the pearl of Siberia. It's a modern, comfortable city — as you walk through it, you will be surprised by the abundance of sports and cultural facilities, sculptures and fountains. But the most important thing is that it's inhabited by astonishing people, many of who are descendants of the pioneers who created the oil industry that is of such importance to the country.
