Yamal

Yamal, a distant land of untouched nature. An astonishing region of beautiful landscapes and a harsh climate, where berries and flowers growing under the northern sun appear to be genuine miracles. From a plane, the territory of Yamal looks like an endless series of lakes and winding rivers, between which there are small islands of dry land. It appears as if in this land of water there is no place for man, and the only inhabitants are like to be fish. For tens of thousands of years this territory was inhabited by mammoths. Their remains are fairly regularly found both by locals and by scientists on expeditions. It was here that a very rare exhibit which became a world sensation, the baby mammoth Lyuba was found. These northern lands are also famed for their peoples – the native peoples of Yamal. They include the Selkups, the Khanti and the largest group, the Nentsy. Today, many representatives of the native peoples live in the region’s large towns and cities. But there are cases where, putting the cares and hustle and bustle of the city behind them, they go off into the depths of the peninsula and set up a chum tent on the shore of a lake in order to fish, to gather berries, to tend herds of deer and to again feel themselves to be at one with nature.
